I spent the weekend camping at Council Grove Lake in the Flint Hills of Kansas. It was a beautiful location with shade trees and within about 20 feet of the lake shore. I had a really productive weekend. I went by myself and managed to read three novels and a book by Sol Stein noted playwright, author and editor. I got a lot out of it. A friend came by from Manhattan for breakfast and we visited awhile, catching up on the summer that was so busy for each of us. It was a very restful and calm way to spend my weekend.
I also managed to rewrite the first three chapters of my current WIP taking into account the new plot features that have evolved over the last month or two. That was a real challenge. Coming up with plausible conflicts and resolutions for my two protagonists.
So now I’m all set to start writing for real. I expect I’ll do nanowrimo again to jump start the rest of the project and for that I have about three weeks to get ready. I’ll have to start my word count somewhere after Oct 31 - Can’t have the plot-monkeys coming after me for cheating.
It was windy as all getout at the lake and when I arrived I got to watch a guy windsurf for about two hours while I settled into my campsite. There were two great blue herons on the other side of the point just down the road from where I setup. Their long legs keeping them suspended above the water in a graceful quest for their next meals.
After dark an opossum wandered up apparently unable to see me in spite of the bright light I had set out to read by. He wandered straight towards me until I asked him what his business was repeatedly and he finally got the message turning back towards the dark outside the perimeter of the glow from my lamp.
There were only three other campers there all weekend and Sunday night only one. It was quiet and peaceful and the first time I’d escaped by myself in the camper this summer. I plan to do that more next year. Hopefully I can even take a long trip or two. We’ll see.
